Technical Information
We recognized users need one of three types of assistance:
- When they don't understand how a specific tool works (i.e. the select by polygon tool)
- When they don't know how to perform a certain task in ArcIMS (i.e. how to make a layer active)
- When they are unfamiliar with GIS and Internet maps in general (i.e. the concept of layers)
We started by developing a comprehensive tutorial system that introduces relevant GIS concepts and then demonstrates how to use ArcIMS maps, addressing more sophisticated procedures as the user progresses through the tutorial. We then developed tool and task based menus that link to relevant sections of the tutorial system. Now we have taken the product a step further with the inclusion of dynamic, toolset-based content that is easy to customize using the framework provided.
The end result is a logical, linear tutorial for new users, and quickly accessible information for more experienced users whether they need some hints on how to use a specific tool or require step by step instructions on performing a certain task. The base content of the Geocortex Compass help system has been regularly improved thanks to user feedback.
Geocortex Compass is an IMF extension consisting of numerous HTML pages, JSP scripts, GIFs, and JPEGs. The code and images are small and efficient- so the pages load quickly.
The best way to get a sense of Geocortex Compass is to browse through it for yourself. We invite you to do so.
