Find your way around a workflow using the new Navigator component [Geocortex Tech Tip]

When editing a large workflow, it can be hard to remember exactly where a particular step is in the overall structure, especially if you wrote it a while ago or it was written by someone else. With the new navigator component in Geocortex Workflow, it’s now easier than ever to find your way around a workflow.

“Hi, I’m Ken Lyon, I’m a member of the Workflow team here at Geocortex. Today, I’m going to show you how to use the new navigator component to help you find your way around a workflow. Let’s get started!

So, the navigator component is a really great addition to the Workflow Designer. You can see down the footer here, click ‘Navigator’, and here is yree showing absolutely everything here in this workflow in a hierarchy.

If I click on one of these notes, it takes me straight to it. It can expand and collapse – as you may expect – and frame will be around absolutely everything.

Also, you’ll notice that something has an ID showing beside it here. All that is really great stuff for finding your way around a workflow, but there are also other ways that you can use this component.

Here I’ve got a form. Let’s say, I know I’ve got this search form and I am trying to remind myself where does that actually gets used.

There’s an option here ‘Find everywhere $searchForm is used’. When I click that, there’s this navigator component that appears in a filtered mode, highlighting the items that match that search,

For example, if I click here in the load event of the header, then I can see the set form element, the property activity uses it and there is the ‘$searchForm’.

Here there is an ‘If’ condition, where we are checking something from ‘$searchForm’. So, that’s really useful.

Let’s say you’re looking for something else, you’re saying “you know what, I have a form and I have another form somewhere else, but I can’t just remember where it is.” I can say ‘Find all Display Form activities’, and then this shows me all the forms that are included in this workflow and I can navigate to them as usual.

Once you’re done filtering, you can just click ‘Clear Results’, and then you’re back to seeing full view again.

So, that’s just a few quick tips on how you can use the new very powerful navigator component in the Workflow Designer.
