Registering a subdomain to connect an ArcGIS Enterprise portal to the Geocortex SaaS environment allows users direct access to portal content without the need for installing anything on-premises. This allows the Enterprise portal to be used as an authenticator for Geocortex Designers and viewer applications and provides easy access to updated data and services in the Geocortex SaaS environment.

Hi, it’s Paul here from the Technical Sales Team. Today we’re going to look at how you can connect your ArcGIS Enterprise portal to the Geocortex SaaS environment by registering a subdomain. This allows you to access all your portal content when you’re building Geocortex applications without having to install anything on-premises. Let’s take a look!
Registering a subdomain has many advantages since it allows you to use the Geocortex managed SaaS environment to connect directly to your Esri ArcGIS portal installation. This means you can use your Enterprise portal for ArcGIS as an authenticator for your Designers and viewer applications and gain access to your on-premises data and services all while staying up to date using our SaaS environment. So, there are no manual upgrades required for using this setup.
Here we are in our apps.geocortex.com launch page. We can choose any of the applications here. I’ll choose Geocortex Web as an example. You’ll see on the sign-in pages for each of our Designers that there’s a link you can click on to create a subdomain. If I click this “Need to create a subdomain?” link, it will launch us right into our Geocortex Community page and will open an article article that lists the steps on how to register a subdomain.
By the way, if you’re not already signed in, you can sign in with your ArcGIS identity to access to this article. This article has some good information and I want to highlight a few things.
As I mentioned, all the data within your portal can remain on-premises, it doesn’t need to be externally accessible. This includes all portal data and services. All of that can stay inside of your on-premises environment. How is this possible?
All our Geocortex products are hosted as static content within our SaaS environment. So, when you open a Geocortex application, it will simply download this content local to your machine. From there, you would be using the regular access that you have from your local machine to your portal to access all the data that you need. There’s no direct connection from the portal servers or data sent from that portal server over into the SaaS environment. So, it’s a secure set up.
Now I just want to go over a few things that you’ll need to provide to register a subdomain. To register a subdomain, you’ll need to create a ticket for our Support Team.
You’ll need to provide a “Short Name for your Subdomain” – just a two to sixteen character name. We suggest that you give us 3 choices. This ensures that you’ll at least get one of your top three choices if one of them is already taken. And this way there’s less back and forth communication required.
You’ll also need to provide your “Portal URL” for public access. And then also an “App ID from your Esri ArcGIS Portal”. This app ID is created in your portal and this what registers your Geocortex products.
This information is then sent to our Support Team so that your subdomain can be registered. Once it’s registered, you’re all set to navigate to that domain and start building Geocortex content. It’s a very easy process to get this up and running!
